More about the office and the people who work there is on our Penistone page.
Stocksbridge has been part of the City of Sheffield since 1974, even though the Barnsley borough wraps around it to the north and east. Our Penistone office sits on the Barnsley side of that line. That can look like a complication, but it isn't one: a solicitor in England and Wales can act for you wherever you live and wherever your property is.
The boundary does matter in one respect: which council you deal with. Property searches for a house in Stocksbridge or Deepcar are made with Sheffield City Council, and if social services become involved with a family, the local authority will be Sheffield rather than Barnsley. Stocksbridge has its own town council as well, but neither of those things is its responsibility.
The council that answers your searches depends on where the property is, not where your solicitor works. So two houses only a couple of miles apart can be searched through different authorities: a house in Deepcar goes to Sheffield City Council, while one in Wortley, on the other side of the boundary, goes to Barnsley. We act on properties in both council areas, and your purchase runs the same way whichever applies.
Sheffield City Council answers the standard questions a buyer's solicitor asks about planning history, roads and formal notices, and the local land charges register records restrictions on the property itself. Drainage and environmental searches come from other providers. When the results arrive, we explain anything that affects your decision before you exchange contracts.
Andrew Baines, a partner in the firm, and Charlotte Binns, a conveyancing executive, handle conveyancing at Penistone. Both are from the town, and their work covers freehold and leasehold sales and purchases, new builds, remortgages and transfers of equity.
To request a conveyancing quote, call the Penistone office on 01226 762261. Our fees page shows all our up to date fees.
Andrew also heads the firm's private client work, so Penistone is the obvious place to make a will, put a Lasting Power of Attorney in place or get help with an estate. If you die without a will, the law sets out who inherits, and an unmarried partner is not on that list. A Lasting Power of Attorney lets someone you trust make decisions if you lose capacity, but it cannot be used until the Office of the Public Guardian has registered it.
If you are dealing with the estate of someone who has died, we can tell you whether probate is needed and handle the administration. Our wills page covers the process in more detail.
Our family solicitors are based at the Barnsley offices. They advise on divorce and separation, arrangements for children, financial settlements, and prenuptial and cohabitation agreements. You can read about the team on our Barnsley page, or go straight to divorce and separation and financial provision.
If social workers from Sheffield City Council have been in touch about your children, get advice early. Our social services team advises parents and relatives at meetings with the local authority and in care proceedings, and where you are eligible for legal aid, we put the funding in place straight away. Outside office hours, ring 07876 220431. See our social services page for more.
Our employment advice covers settlement agreements and other problems at work, and for accident claims the first consultation is free. For a business, or for a dispute over a contract, a debt or faulty goods or services, see our pages on business property, landlord and tenant matters and dispute resolution.
They may cost a different amount, because part of the local search fee is set by the council. We will tell you the search fees for your property before you instruct us.
Yes. You are welcome at any of our offices. Barnsley is about nine miles from Stocksbridge, and our family and social services solicitors work there.
We can quote a fixed fee for a lot of our work, such as a house sale or purchase, a will, a divorce or a settlement agreement. For anything else, you will know how the charges work before you commit. Full details are on our fees page.
