Social Services

When social services become involved with your family, it can be an upsetting and confusing time. You may feel that decisions are being made without you, or that your rights as a parent, guardian or relative are not being respected. At Howard & Co., our experienced team is here to guide you through the process, explain your options in plain English, and represent your interests in and out of court. Our priority is always the welfare of the child, while making sure your voice is heard.

We have an out of hours contact number for social services needs.

Please call or text 07876220431

Local Authority Involvement & Social Care Cases

If the Local Authority has raised concerns about your child’s safety or wellbeing, they may start investigations or arrange meetings with you. This can feel overwhelming, but it is important to get legal advice early. We can attend meetings with you, explain what the Local Authority can and cannot do, and help you put forward your side of the story clearly and confidently.

Care Proceedings & Court Hearings

Sometimes the Local Authority may apply to the court to decide where a child should live or who should look after them. This is called care proceedings. We represent parents, guardians and children in these cases, making sure their rights are protected and that the court has a full picture of the family situation. Our solicitors are experienced in handling these sensitive cases and will support you through every stage of the process.

Advice for Relatives & Interested Parties

Grandparents, extended family members, and carers often want to be involved when a child’s future is being decided. We can advise you on your legal options and help you apply to the court if necessary. Whether you are seeking contact, residence, or special guardianship, we will guide you through the process and support your application.

Emergency Protection & Interim Orders

In urgent cases, the Local Authority or the court may act quickly if they believe a child is at immediate risk of harm. This could involve emergency protection orders or interim care orders. If you are faced with this situation, it is vital to get legal support straightaway. We can act urgently on your behalf to protect your rights, respond to applications, and ensure that the court hears your position clearly and without delay.

When to seek legal advice

You should contact a solicitor as soon as possible if:

  • Social services have contacted you about your child.
  • You have been invited to a meeting with the Local Authority.
  • You receive court papers or are told care proceedings are being started.
  • You are a relative who wants to be involved in a child’s care.
  • You are facing emergency or interim orders.
