Interested Parties

When Social Services become involved with a family, the impact can be far-reaching. Parents, children, grandparents, and other relatives may all find themselves drawn into the process. At Howard & Co., we understand how worrying this can be and we are here to support you whatever your role may be. Our team will explain the process in plain English, make sure your views are heard, and provide clear advice tailored to your situation.

Children

Children have the right to have their voices heard, especially as they get older. If you are over 16, your opinions about your care and living arrangements carry real weight with the Local Authority and the Court. We can help you understand your rights, guide you through the options available, and support you in making decisions about your future — whether your case is resolved by agreement or proceeds to a hearing. In some cases, children may also be separately represented by a solicitor or guardian; we will explain when this applies and how it works.

Parents

Having Social Services involved with your child is one of the most difficult situations a parent can face. You may feel that your parenting is under scrutiny or that decisions are being made without your input. We will stand beside you from the very first involvement with Social Services — whether that is a home visit, a meeting with the Local Authority, or formal court proceedings. We will explain what Social Services can and cannot do, help you present your side clearly, and fight to protect your rights as a parent. If the matter does go to court, our experienced solicitors will represent you every step of the way.

Grandparents

Grandparents often play a vital role in their grandchildren’s lives, yet their voice is not always automatically heard in social care cases. Whether you want to support the parents, raise concerns about your grandchild’s care, or offer an alternative home, we can help you become involved in the process. We advise grandparents on applications for contact, residence, or Special Guardianship Orders, giving you the opportunity to step in when needed and ensuring your relationship with your grandchild is recognised and protected.

Other Family Members & Interested Parties

Extended family members such as aunts, uncles, or older siblings, as well as carers or others with Parental Responsibility, may also have a role to play in a child’s future. We can advise you on your legal rights and options, including how to apply to be joined to care proceedings or seek contact with a child. If you are a parent who has not been involved in your child’s life recently, we can help you re-establish your role and have your say in the child’s care arrangements.
